Meghalaya: Labourer Stoned to Death

A daily labourer hailing from Assam was allegedly stoned to death and another labourer seriously injured after he was beaten up near here, police said today.

On November 20, three labourers (two from Assam) were abducted from their work place at Mawlai in the outskirt of the city by some people, who whisked them away in a taxi to an isolated spot at Umbir village near the scenic Umiam lake, assaulted the trio, they said.

One of the labourers P Deka, 20, from Dhubri district of Assam was stoned to death, while another D Banya of Morigaon was admitted in Nongpoh civil hospital while A Hajong is still missing, police said.

Khasi Student Union (KSU) leaders – Mawiong unit president Damuyan Skhemmiew, vice-president Banker Nongkseh, 'finance secretary' Anthony Warbah and Nongkwar unit general secretary Sil Thangkhiew – were arrested yesterday along with the driver of the taxi T Marngar in this connection, police said.

The police are on the lookout for two other assailants who were involved in the incident.

The arrested persons were produced before a court which remanded them to six-days police custody.

The KSU has been strongly advocating for a stronger anti-influx mechanism in the state.
