Meghalaya students oppose being shifted from SVNIT

SURAT: Students of National Institute of Technology, Meghalaya, (NITM), who are currently studying in Sardar Vallabhbhai National Institute of Technology (SVNIT), Surat, for Bachelor of Technology (BTech) degrees in different streams, are opposing the decision of the authorities concerned to transfer them to their parent institution.

The students in a representation to Union ministry of human resource development (MHRD) have demanded that their transfer be cancelled as the infrastructure there was poor. There are 180 students of NITM in second year and third year of BTech course at SVNIT. The third year students are in SVNIT since 2010 while the second year students came last year. MHRD in its order had said these students be shifted to NITM from January 2013.

In their letter to MHRD, the students have said, "At least 12 students live in a single room in NIT Meghalaya in Shillong. It does not have a hostel of its own. The students are taken to IIT Guwahati for laboratory work every weekend. There are only 11 faculty members and facilities of sports, library and internet are non existent. The NIT Meghalaya is not in a position to support student strength of 241 on the campus. Moreover, the training and placement cell of NIT Meghalaya is yet to be set up."

An NITM student said, "NITM is not in a condition to give the best of education that the students aspire for in an institute like NIT."

P D Porey, director, SVNIT, said, "We don't have any say in this decision which has been taken by the central government. Only the ministry officials will be able to throw more light on the subject."
