HM assures all necessary steps to help contain militancy

Union Home Minister P Chidambaram has assured the Meghalaya Government all necessary help to contain militancy-related violence in the state, especially Garo National Liberation Army (GNLA) activities in Garo Hills region of the state.

The assurance was given to Chief Minister Mukul Sangma during a meeting convened by the Union Minister in New Delhi yesterday, official sources said.

Mr Chidambaram also expressed concern over the spurt in militancy related violence in the state.

The meeting, which was convened to review the security scenario in the state, was attended by Union Home Secretary Rajkumar Singh, senior officials of the Home ministry and top police officials of the state, sources said.

Mr Chidambaram also asked the chief minister to take all necessary steps to deal with militancy in order to ensure sustained peace in the state.

The GNLA had been involved in a number of kidnapping cases for ransom for the last few months and slapped extortion demands on traders and government officials besides killing policemen and labourers.

The Meghalaya Government had earlier asked the Centre for additional paramilitary forces to check the problem of militancy in the state, sources added.
