The All Jaintia Youth Welfare Organisation (AJYWO) has expressed concern over increase in number of drug users in Meghalaya, especially in Jaintia Hills district.
"In a recent report released by the North East India Drugs and Aids Care (NEIDAC) here recently, Jaintia Hills district topped the list of drug users and something needs to be done to control the menace," AJYWO said.
In a report released by NEIDAC, there are a total of 17,833 drug users in the state and Jaintia hills district tops the list with 5398 users following which AJYWO expressed concern over drug menace.
The number of drug users in the state has increased 33 times in the past 10 years, the report had said.
The organisation has also expressed deep concern over reports which show that the Jaintia Hills district tops the crime list.
As drug abuse and rise in crime in the district were related, the AJYWO urged the government to take urgent steps to curb the increasing crimes and use of drug in the district.
