Full security promised to village chief

Meghalaya Chief Minister Mukul Sangma today assured full security to a Khasi tribal village chief after he was threatened by Assam-based Karbi Lungri National Liberation Front (KLNLF) and United People's Democratic Solidarity militants along the inter-state boundary.

"The CM has assured us to provide security to the headman and the area," Nongkrem legislator and People’s Movement leader Ardent M Basaiawmoit told reporters.

Blickstar Sohtun, who heads a conglomeration of chiefs of 24 villages on the Assam-Meghalaya border in disputed Block II in Ri-Bhoi district was threatened not to implement any of the Central government’s schemes.

According to the village chief, on September 12 members of the two militant outfits warned him against implementing the development schemes like MGNREGS in the 24 villages at the inter-state border.

The state government's assurance to provide security to the headman and the people of the area came after a delegation of the People's Movement met the chief minister.
