Brooklyn resident wins Miss America crown
A 23-year-old contestant from Brooklyn, New York, has won the title of Miss America.
Mallory Hagan won the beauty pageant after tap dancing to James Brown’s ‘Get Up Off of That Thing’ and answering a question about whether armed guards belong in grade schools by saying we should not fight violence with violence.
Hagan defeated Miss South Carolina Ali Rogers, who took second, and Miss Oklahoma Alicia Clifton, who finished third.
Hagan wins a $50,000 (Dh183,650) college scholarship and gets the crown for one year. Her platform was stopping child sexual abuse.
She is expected to spend her title reign on a nationwide speaking tour and raising money for the Children’s Miracle Network, the organisation’s official charity.
Hagan defeated several other notable competitors who grabbed headlines this year because of their backstories.
The 92nd Miss America annual show held this year at the Planet Hollywood Resort and Casino on the Las Vegas Strip is the culmination of a week of preliminary competitions and months of preparations for the titleholders from all 50 states plus the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico and the US Virgin Islands.
The pageant, which started as little more than an Atlantic City bathing suit revue, broke viewership records in its heyday and bills itself as one of the world’s largest scholarship programmes for women.
But like other pageants, the show has struggled to stay relevant as national attitudes regarding women’s rights and civil rights have evolved.
More recently, the rise of reality television has provided a superabundance of options for Americans interested in seeing attractive young people in competitive pursuits.

Urvashi could not control her emotions when she was declared as the winner while Imam looked composed and forthcoming.
Urvashi has won Rs 50 lakh and a trophy as the prize, while Colors channel gave Rs 10 lakh to Imam for being a 'wholehearted entertainer'. He had been given Rs 5 lakh by the channed during the show earlier.
Urvashi had been in Bigg Boss house from day one - starting October 1, whereas Imam was first placed in 'Padosi House' before being shifted to Bigg Boss house.
During the show, Urvashi stayed to herself - being straight forward while Imam was an entertainer.
The show, aired on Colors channel, began with 14 contestants and the number increased to 19 gradually.

John Kerry 'to be nominated for US secretary of state'
US President Barack Obama is to nominate John Kerry to be his next secretary of state, US media report. Mr Kerry would replace Hillary Clinton at the head of the state department, the media quoted senior administration officials as saying. Mr Kerry ran as Democratic presidential candidate in 2004 and is chairman of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee. His nomination comes after the US ambassador to the UN, Susan Rice, withdrew from consideration last week. Republicans had fiercely criticised her role in the aftermath of the deadly attack on the US consulate in Benghazi, Libya, in September.
Mr Kerry, 69, would be Mr Obama's first new cabinet nomination since he won a second term last month. The president will also have to name a new defence secretary to replace Leon Panetta, and a new director of the CIA to take over from David Petreaus, who quit last month after admitting an affair.
Mr Kerry, a decorated Vietnam veteran, lost a close presidential election to George W Bush in 2004 and had been a contender for the state department in 2008, before Mrs Clinton was chosen. Mr Kerry has since remained an influential senator, making key trips to Pakistan, Syria and the Gaza Strip. Mrs Clinton has indicated she will step down early next year. Mr Kerry will have to give up his seat in the Senate, where he represents Massachusetts. The Democrats may face a tough battle to keep it in the subsequent election.

TIME's Person of the Year for 2012 Barack Obama
US President Barack Obama was named TIME's Person of the Year for 2012, because of his historic win over the re-election in November 2012 which is being considered as symbol of the nation's changing demographics amid the backdrop of high unemployment and other challenges.
His name was announced by TIME editor Rick Stengel on NBC's Today program on 19 December 2012.
It is the second time Barack Obama is being accorded with this honour. He had also received the honour in 2008, when he was first elected as president.
Obama had won re-election despite a higher unemployment rate than anybody's had to face in basically in 70 years. He's the first Democrat to actually win two consecutive terms with over 50 percent of the vote.
The short list for the honour included Malala Yousafzai, the Pakistani teenager who was shot in the head for advocating for girls' education, as well as Egyptian President Mohamed Morsi, Apple CEO Tim Cook and Italian physicist Fabiola Giannati.
Time's Person of the Year is the person or thing that has most influenced the culture and the news during the past year for good or for ill. In 2010, Facebook founder and CEO Mark Zuckerberg received the honour.
Last year in 2011 Time honoured "The Protester," citing dissent across the Middle East that spread to Europe and the United States, saying the protesters reshaped global politics.
Other previous winners have included Federal Reserve Chairman Ben Bernanke, Bono and President George W. Bush.
